Cochrane International Mobility

Gobe with lines connecting different places

Building global connections in evidence-based healthcare

The Cochrane International Mobility programme (CIM) is a global exchange initiative designed to strengthen international collaboration across the Cochrane Community. By connecting participants with host groups around the world, CIM promotes learning, mentoring, knowledge sharing, and capacity building within evidence synthesis.

Since its launch, multiple people   have taken part in CIM, from countries including Sweden, Italy, Croatia and USA. They have engaged in research, training, and knowledge translation that supports Cochrane’s mission to deliver trusted health evidence.

How did the programme start?

Matteo Bruschettini, Lotty Hooft and Barbara Nussbaumer-Streit funded the project, with the aim of enriching the training of medical students and promoting international relationships between Cochrane Centres.

What is the purpose of the programme?

CIM offers two-way learning opportunities for both participants and host staff. Typical activities include:

  • Contributing to Cochrane protocols and reviews - most of CIM researchers succeeded to publish at least one Cochrane review!
  • Assisting in planning and delivering workshops
  • Supporting knowledge translation and engagement activities

Participants benefit from the clinical and methodological expertise of their hosts, while staff overseeing placements gain valuable mentoring and supervisory experience.
For Cochrane, CIM builds capacity and fosters a strong global network of collaboration.

The CIM showcase the truly international spirit of Cochrane Geograpahic Groups, bridging knowledge and expertise across borders.

How does it work?

Placements are flexible and may last from several weeks to several months.

  • On-campus placements allow for immersive collaboration within host centres.
  • Remote placements provide global access without travel costs.
  • Funding is usually self-arranged (e.g., through universities or institutions), though some Groups can provide workspace or accommodation.
  • Training and mentoring are tailored to the host Group’s expertise.

Which Cochrane Groups are offering placements?

CIM started with Cochrane Sweden, Cochrane Austria, and Cochrane Netherlands. Today, many more Cochrane Groups worldwide offer opportunities.
