The Cochrane Affiliated Group – Balearic Islands participated in the 9th edition of Científiques a l’Aula, an annual outreach programme led by IdISBa that brings scientific research into schools and promotes the visibility of women in science. The initiative coincides with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and is one of the flagship science‑communication activities in the Balearic Islands.
Maria Antònia Fiol de Roque, co‑director of the Cochrane Affiliated Group – Balearic Islands and specialist in evidence‑based medicine, delivered one of the opening sessions at CEIP Gabriel Janer Manila (Pla de na Tesa, Marratxí). The session was attended by two groups of 5th and 6th grade students (46 pupils), as well as representatives from the regional health and education authorities and IdISBa.
Her activity introduced students to women scientists from both historical and contemporary contexts — including researchers from Spain and the Balearic Islands — and used these examples to spark discussion about gender equity in science. Building on this, she explained the core principles of evidence‑based medicine, how scientific evidence is generated and synthesised, and why reliable information is essential for informed decision‑making in healthcare.
The session was interactive and adapted to the students’ level, helping them understand what trustworthy evidence is and how it guides health decisions. By linking evidence appraisal with real‑world examples and female scientific role models, the activity effectively promoted Cochrane’s mission of improving critical thinking and fostering informed decisions from an early age.
This participation reflects the Cochrane Affiliated Group – Balearic Islands’ commitment to public engagement, scientific literacy and the promotion of Cochrane principles in the local community. It also supports the Group’s broader mission to inspire future scientific vocations — particularly among girls — and to strengthen the culture of evidence‑informed health understanding in the region.
