Title:
Beyond the Abstract: Tools for Critical Appraisal of Health Research
Date and Duration:
6 November 2025 – 5 hours (09:30–14:30)
Location:
Aula 202–203, Hospital Universitario Son Espases (HUSE), Palma, Spain
Organized by:
Cochrane Balearic Islands Group – Cochrane Iberoamerican Network
In collaboration with: Multiprofessional Teaching Unit of Mental Health, Balearic Islands Health Service
Trainers:
Ignacio Ricci Cabello, Pau Riera Serra, Maria Antònia Fiol de Roque
Participants:
Approx. 40 attendees, primarily mental health residents (psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health nurses) in training
Objectives:

Promote Cochrane and its work:
The session introduced Cochrane’s mission, methodology, and resources, emphasizing its role in producing high-quality, independent evidence to inform health decisions globally.
Train users of evidence:
Participants were trained to critically appraise different study designs (systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, cross-sectional studies, and qualitative research) using validated tools such as AMSTAR 2, Cochrane Risk of Bias, AXIS, and CASP.

Structure:

Introduction to Evidence-Based Medicine and Cochrane (35 min)
Overview of study designs and appraisal tools (100 min)
Practical group exercise: critical appraisal of real papers (60 min)
Group presentations and discussion (60 min)
Evaluation and closing (10 min)

Justification:
This activity was conceived and implemented specifically as a Cochrane initiative, aligned with our strategic objectives to strengthen evidence-based practice and promote Cochrane’s work. It was not a pre-existing course repurposed for reporting but designed from the outset to fulfill Cochrane’s mission.
Impact:
Participant feedback was highly positive, with an overall rating of 4.04/5 and strong agreement that the session improved their ability to critically appraise scientific literature (average score 3.84/5). The practical component was particularly valued, reinforcing the relevance of Cochrane tools in real-world decision-making. This collaboration strengthened ties between Cochrane and the mental health training program, ensuring that future specialists integrate evidence-based principles into clinical practice.
