Cochrane South Africa recently organized a hands-on workshop on evidence-based healthcare (EBHC) research methods for staff and postgraduate students (participants: 25 online and 13 in-person) at the Nelson Mandela University, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Hosted at their Ocean Science campus in Gqeberha from 26 May to 27 May 2025, this workshop aimed to provide participants with practical tools of Cochrane Systematic review methods that can be incorporated into their research activities. The workshop covered all major components of conducting a Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis, such as formulating a research question, searching for articles, data extraction, risk of bias assessment, statistical analysis, and a meta-analysis primer. Additionally, participants were also introduced to the structure, vision, and mission of the Cochrane Collaboration. A key feature of this workshop was the interactive sessions where participants were encouraged to work on their research questions and to ultimately present their work for constructive feedback from peers, based on EBHC methods. The workshop was well-received and deepened the participants' understanding of EBHC methods whilst creating a supportive learning environment.
